A-7 Void - Preliminary Jury and The Final Jury
In this assignment we were required to design five related voids which occupy approximately
10000 cm³ volume by using two surface elements and minimum ten linear design elements.
In my design, I tried to set relations by cutting some parts of the continuous cardboard surface and to be able to define volumes I used sticks and acetate paper..After panel discussion, we learned that while doing this we needed to pay attention to physical and visual relationships and how we can provide it with different types of materials. Moreover, translucent acetate paper does not allow us to create physical relationship between voids just visual so I learned that to set a physical relation between them I needed to establish a direct relationship using the surfaces of the volumes.
Then, we were introduced our final jury assignments. We were going to design a total number of seventeen interrelated volumes with varying qualities. We had to use one single cardboard element as a continuous surface.
This time, while designing I started with the continuous cardboard surface. To be able to set a rule, I used repetition and variation on cardboard. I always folded it by using trapezoids, triangles and paralellograms. Then after designed it, I started to think about voids, their positions and possible relationships between them.To make a distinction between different voids I used different surface materials and to create different voids I used different types of them by thinking their visual qualities and volumes' light conditions. After preliminary jury, I learned that I need to find a way to use different materials in different ways and I need to discover materials' qualities and how I can use them for diverse goals. Also, my volumes and their relationships were always inside and the cardboard was like a shell for them so I decided to change this conditions until the final jury in one week.
After the jury, we had one more week to improve our designs and I made three more projects to see that how I could fix my problems. For the last state of my design I changed my development and I reduced the types of the geometrical shapes on it because I realized that this situation was restricting me and it was not easy to work with. Therefore, I used triangles and paralellograms this time. Then to integrate my cardboard into the design I folded it in a different way and I placed some volumes which are made from different types of materials not with cardboard in central of my design and I used them like transition space. This allowed me to move on different directions and it was easier to set multiple relationships and in this way controlling distribution of materials in overall design and integrating cardboard into the design was easier.
