A-7 Void - Preliminary Jury and The Final Jury

In this assignment we were required to design five related voids which occupy approximately
10000 cm³ volume by using two surface elements and minimum ten linear design elements.
In my design, I tried to set relations by cutting some parts of the continuous cardboard surface and to be able to define volumes I used sticks and acetate paper..After panel discussion, we learned that while doing this we needed to pay attention to physical and visual relationships and how we can provide it with different types of materials. Moreover, translucent acetate paper does not allow us to create physical relationship between voids just visual so I learned that to set a physical relation between them I needed to establish a direct relationship using the surfaces of the volumes.

Then, we were introduced our final jury assignments. We were going to design a total number of seventeen interrelated volumes with varying qualities. We had to use one single cardboard element as a continuous surface.

This time, while designing I started with the continuous cardboard surface. To be able to set a rule, I used repetition and variation on cardboard. I always folded it by using trapezoids, triangles and paralellograms. Then after designed it, I started to think about voids, their positions and possible relationships between them.To make a distinction between different voids I used different surface materials and to create different voids I used different types of them by thinking their visual qualities and volumes' light conditions. After preliminary jury, I learned that I need to find a way to use different materials in different ways and I need to discover materials' qualities and how I can use them for diverse goals. Also, my volumes and their relationships were always inside and the cardboard was like a shell for them so I decided to change this conditions until the final jury in one week.

After the jury, we had one more week to improve our designs and I made three more projects to see that how I could fix my problems. For the last state of my design I changed my development and I reduced the types of the geometrical shapes on it because I realized that this situation was restricting me and it was not easy to work with. Therefore, I used triangles and paralellograms this time. Then to integrate my cardboard into the design I folded it in a different way and I placed some volumes which are made from different types of materials not with cardboard in central of my design and I used them like transition space. This allowed me to move on different directions and it was easier to set multiple relationships and in this way controlling distribution of materials in overall design and integrating cardboard into the design was easier.

Phase 9 : Observation from Faculty Building

In this assignment, we were required to walk around the faculty building ,and exploring at least three related volumes. Then, we needed to express the characteristics of these volumes  and their relationships by using sketches, drawings and photos.

In this photo, I saw 4 related volumes. Each of 3 volume is opening same volume. All of the volumes are related with one common volume.

Every volume has its own specific dimensions and shapes. This one (the one in the middle in the first photo) has a rectangular shape ,and it has the smallest volume. With its boundaries, I think it is the most well defined one.

This is the volume which is the left one in the photo. It has actually seperate volumes in itself. If we look it at outside, it has a more complex shape because of its small volumes.

In this photo, I saw four related volumes. The one in the front, the one in back of it, the one bottom-most volume and the one which has the biggest area and all of three are opening there. Each volume is related with this common volume. The first and second have same sizes and rectangular shapes. Bottom-most volume is bigger and has its seperate and smaller volumes again. The most well defined ones the first and second one because they have all their own boundaries.

Midterm Jury : Double-sided Relief

For the jury assignment we were required to make a double-sided relief representing the design concepts that we choose by using quadrilateral prisms, and the model had to cover approximately 1000 cm² from the top or bottom view.
Firstly, I determined the concepts to represent in my design. I chose repetition and variation. To apply this concepts, I started by specifying 2 groups. For the first group, I used 2 trapezoids and 1 rectangle. For the second group, I used 2 trapezoids, 1 square and 1 parallelogram. Then, by changing some of the dimensions of the groups, I tried to apply variation concepts. For group A, I had 5 versions and for the group B, I had 4 versions. To set up different relationships, I put together groups in different ways like A-A or B-B or A-B or with versions of them. I repeated group A and its versions 9 times and group B and its versions 10 times. Moreover, I tried to create a surface by using height differences ,and I started from one point by using the heightest one and to the end, I reduced the heights of other prisms.

Phase 8: Rhythm

In this assignment, we were required to create a composition of the concept of the rhythm with letters in white and black on a grey cardboard. As first step, I decided my initial design elements according to their geometrical shapes. I chose A,X,M,Y,Z and W. Secondly, I determined 12 lines which start from left down corner to the right top corner (on diagonal direction of cardboard) to arrange my letters, and all line gaps are expanding from start point to the end in a specific way. I did it because I tried to create a design in which letters are moving on to right up corner and at the same time while moving up, getting bigger in size. I tried to show the rhythm concept by using movement.

Home Assignment: Observation From Campus

rhythm
In this photo, I see that there is a rhythm. There is a regular repetition of columns and a movement from the point that I look to the end of the wall.

rhythm

In this photo, again, I see a rhythm.Pillars are repeating throughout overhead plane until the entrance. Moreover, there is a movement as showing us the way.

rhythm

There is also a rhythm. The repeating elements are stairs here, and between these stair groups, there are two flat planes, and a upward gradual movement.

hierarchy

In this photo, I see hierarchy. It is a structure consisting of three steps, and between them there is a high difference. Our focal point is on the heighest one,so I think it is a hierarchy.

hierarchy

In this photo, I see hierarchy. The building rises gradually, and at the top the heighest one takes attention.

repetition
Here, there is a repetition.Four same rectangular prisms consisting of windows are repeating in a regular way.

repetition
In this photo, I see repetition.Extending pyramid-like structures are repeating regularly along the entire wall.

repetition

Here is a repetition again. On the whole facade, same empty rectangles are repeating as being a figure or empty area is a background, and the vertical and horizontal lines are repeating.

dominance
In this photo, I see the dominance. In this area, the MM building is the heighest structure and it is in the middle of other buildings which surround it.Also there is a gap between MM building and the others, so it is the first building that take our attentions. As a result, it is the dominant part.

dominance
Here, I see the dominance again. On the roof, there is a cut cylinder. It is visible from anywhere and with its location and shape, it is the center of interest and the dominant part.

contrast

Here, I see contrast. There are two elements which have different tonal values like warm and cool, are used. The hardness resulting from the concrete is broken with brick,so there is a harmony which results from contrast.

figure ground
In this photo, I see figure ground relationship. The parts with balcony are repeating regularly on the whole surface, and again we cannot understand which one is figure or background.

figure ground
Here, I see a figure ground relationship.Columns are repeating amd behind them, windows are repeating, too. However, when we look ahead, it is going like one column one window one column one window again. Therefore we cannot understand which one is figure and which one is background.

figure ground
Here, I see figure ground relationship.Windows are placed on the wall in a way that we cannot understand which is figure.

Phase 7: Hierarchy

(Studio Work)
In this assignment, we were required to make a composition (a relief) representing the concept of hierarchy by using  cylindrical shapes made out of newspaper and craft paper. We were allowed to use them both vertically and horizontally. In studio, I tried to represent hierarchy by height of cylinders and big and bold words from newspaper. Therefore I creted one focal point in corner and made it taller and used big and bold words on it.However, in discussion I realized that there is no figure ground  relationship in circles that are originated with cylinders,so it was not a correct composition.

In second working, I again benefited from
height and big and bold words, but this time to show that my first detected element more clearly, I used three similar groups on cardboard.I tried to place these various cylinders in a more organized way to create figure ground relationship.

Phase 6: Dominance and Contrast

(Studio Work)
In this assignment, we were required to make a 2d composition on a black cardboard (29 x 41) representing the concepts of dominance/contrast.For this, we were given a paper band width of 1 cm.In studio work, I chose my focal point as a black and big triangle.By using paper bands in different numbers, I got different tonal values. For brighter areas I used more bands. With different tones, I tried to show contrast.

(Home Work)
In second work, I determined my dominant part, I mean the center of interest, as rectangle. To take attention to dominant part, I placed rectangle in the upper part of paper and I used it big and black. I positioned the big triangles I created with paper band to show my rectangle (with their corners).
